Food safety in warm weather
Food left in the sun can make people ill, so keep these simple rules.
- Keep cold food cold. Use a cool bag or box with frozen ice packs, and keep it closed until you eat. Keep cold food at 40°F (4°C) or below.
- Use a separate cool bag for drinks, so the food one isn’t opened every few minutes.
- Watch the clock. Throw away perishable food that has been out of the fridge for more than two hours on a hot day. When it’s above 90°F (32°C), make that one hour.
- Cook meat right through if you’re barbecuing, and keep raw meat away from food that’s ready to eat.
- Clean hands. Pack wipes and hand gel, and wash with soap and water when you can.
