Family picnics
A picnic is one of the cheapest ways to get children outside for a whole afternoon.
- Pick your day early. Choose one of the two weekends and give everyone a time. For a bigger family gathering, a group chat or event invite saves a dozen phone calls.
- Check the forecast two days ahead. Pack sun cream and hats, and a jumper in case it turns.
- Choose somewhere easy to reach. A park with toilets and shade beats a beauty spot an hour’s drive away when you have small children.
- Pack things that don’t break. Plastic or bamboo plates and cups, and a wipe-clean mat.
- Bring something to play with. A ball, a frisbee or a kite will keep them busy longer than you’d think.
